Gus Outdoors: An Interview with One Cool Kid and Master Nature Explorer

It's no secret that my family thinks Gus Nightingale from the DVD series Gus Outdoors is a cool kid.  Mom is a fan for all the typical "mom" reasons --- his videos are educational, he is a good role model, etc., etc.  My six-year-old and two-year-old are enthralled by him because he does fun, cool stuff and they enjoy watching his nature explorations.  Plus, what kid can resist being taught words like "regurgitation" and then shown what it means!  Yuck --- but way cool!

"A gull's idea of food shopping for the kids is far from the usual grocery markets we humans frequent. Gulls need to scavenge or capture their food from around the coastal waters of North America.  So how do they get the food back to the nest for the chicks? They don't have hands or arms and their webbed feet are only suitable for swimming, right? So they eat it. That's right, they eat what they find and fly it back to their chicks where they, and this is the best part, throw up or regurgitate the food. This way it's easier for the young chicks to eat and digest (because it's already partly digested!). That's so gross... but pretty cool!" - Gus Nightingale, star of Gus Outdoors
When I told my daughter I was interviewing Gus's dad, Sean Nightingale, she asked "are you going to get to talk to Gus?"  My original plan was to do just that, but then I realized how much more fun and interesting it would be if another child interviewed Gus.  I asked her if she would like to ask Gus questions and she immediately replied with a huge "yes, Mommy please!"

The interview you will read below was conducted by my daughter referred to as KDN Jr., with one question I sneaked in at the end.  What?  I like Gus too!

Enjoy the interview!

Kids Discover Nature Jr.:  What is your favorite place to visit and why?

Gus Nightingale: The Bahamas - because it's always so warm and you can always wear shorts. Also, there are so many creatures to see.

KDN Jr.:  What is your favorite fish?

GN:  Tiger Shark.

KDN Jr.:  Have you ever held a lobster? What was it like?

GN:  Yes. It was like holding a giant hermit crab. Both have hard shells, antenna, and claws.

KDN Jr.:  What is the next place you would like to explore? Will you watch birds again?

GN:  Nantucket Island. We will probably see birds there.

KDN Jr.:  Do you help your Dad (write the script and edit the video footage)?

GN: Yes I do. Sometimes I make up my own sentences and ideas.

KDN Jr.:  What was it like watching yourself on TV?

GN:  It was fun to see myself on TV.

KDN Jr.:  It appears that you enjoy teaching about nature. What do you hope will be the outcome of making your DVD series?

GN: I hope it will be on Animal Planet.
