Welcome to KidsDiscoverNature.com – Your Guide to Connecting Kids with Nature

Welcome! This is the place to find great outdoor activities for children. No matter where you live, you can help them learn about and experience nature by following tips to get them interested in being outside. And best of all...it doesn't cost a penny.

My name is Jodi Valenta.  I launched KidsDiscoverNature Blog in Winter 2009 on a whim because I wanted to provide guidance to parents on encouraging children to get outdoors and connect with nature.  Check out my first blog post to learn more about why I am blogging on this topic.  You can also learn more about me by reading an interview I did for PlanetGreen.com.

From Concern to Inspiration
It is well-documented that children do not spend nearly enough time enjoying the outdoors and are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow. They receive many benefits from exploring and playing in the natural world such as relaxation, creativity and imagination building, exercise and much more!  In a nutshell, I think it is important for my children, and all children, to experience the same childhood we all had, one that was filled with dirt digging, tree climbing, fishing, exploring, running, jumping and the freedom to just discover nature!  This it what inspires me to write my posts.

Why KidsDiscoverNature?
For fourteen years, my professional career was devoted to fish and wildlife ecology and conservation. I have an Master of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a concentration in environmental studies. I own my own consulting firm, Mile Creek Communications, which provides strategic marketing and communications services for the conservation community and outdoor recreation industry. As an entrepreneur, blogger, mom to two young children and resident nature girl, my goal is to pass my knowledge and love of nature on to my children and to others. Through this blog, I hope to inspire parents and caregivers to tell their kids to “go play outside” and provide useful tips and fun ideas to help them motivate their children to head outdoors and simply enjoy nature!

KidsDiscoverNature is proud to have been nominated for Treehugger.com's Best of Green award!

  5. I'm glad to discover KDN. I like what you're doing and would like to be supportive. I've subscribed and will check in now and then.
Though my blog's not aimed specifically at children, it's all about curiosity and wonder. I'm a supporter of the Children & Nature Connection and wonder if you know of that organization -- came out of the Richard Louv book "Last Child in the Woods."
    Keep up the good work!

  6. Found this looking around, The Journey of Fallen Rock hopefully will help some want to be more involved with the outdoors and how great they are but how fragile they can be.
